The AI revolution is here, and Anthropic is at the forefront. Anthropic has established itself as a visionary company that is focused on developing safe, predictable and reliable AI. Anthropic currently has a LLM called Claude which is comparable to Chat GPT and is working on developing ClaudeNext. The market is shifting from search to explain, and AI is playing a key role in this transition. AI is being used to develop new products and services that can help people understand the world around them.

Everyone agrees that AI should be regulated, but there is no consensus on how to do so. Anthropic believes that AI regulation should focus on safety and transparency. The company is working with regulators to develop policies that will help ensure that AI is used for good.

Anthropic is facing fierce competition from other tech giants, such as Google and Microsoft. However, Anthropic's importance for safety gives it a unique advantage. The company is also partnering with other companies to accelerate the development of safe and predictable AI.

STEEP Analysis:

Societal:

  • The societal aspect has crucial factors that would affect Anthropic, such as the inevitable gravitation of people and corporations onto the AI landscape, where the surge in demand for LLMs like Anthropic’s offering of Claude would be beneficial to players in the space.

  • Furthermore, there would be social expectations for ethical AI practices, and safety with respect to data privacy, if a larger subset of the population were to enter the AI space. Adapting to these requirements would ensure a positive perception and reputation.

Technological:

  • Rapid advances in AI/ML algorithms and techniques would lead to new innovations from competitors that could enhance their presence and bolster their progress in the AI playing field.

  • Cloud computing platforms enabling AI adoption, like Google with its LLM, Bard.

  • Predictability and safety of AI technology in the future will affect adoption rates among the people depending on their comfort and trust using the LLM.

Economical:

  • These would be the investments made in the AI space to develop progressively better models and to train the LLMs with larger and newer data sets.

  • Availability of venture capital/corporate funding for AI startups.

  • Health of the technological software industry and economical factors of the country.

  • The budget of enterprise customers and their spending capabilities along with demand cycles will be an important factor that will affect the companies in this field.

Environmental:

There are no external environmental factors that we see affecting Anthropic in the near future.

Political:

  • Increased government scrutiny and regulations regarding uncertainty of AI ethics and risks related to job displacement, privacy concerns, biases, etc, is a critical factor that can influence political decisions and trends

  • Exporting controls on advanced technologies by governments or other regulatory bodies is a political factor that affects companies competing for market share, especially in expansion to new geographical locations.

The 2 critically uncertain factors are Technological and Political.

Specifically, in the Technological factors, the safety and predictability of AI tech is the most crucial, and among the Political factors, the rigidity of the government regulations in various geographical areas is the most unpredictable and important to consider.

Critical Uncertainties:

Political: Regulations on Privacy and AI can have an outsized influence on how AGI technology proceeds in terms of development and usage. Strict regulations can put the industry in a chokehold, while more lax regulations can help the industry take shape and define itself according to the market needs.

Technological: Large Language Models (LLMs) can be prone to more erratic responses and can influence users in dangerous ways. LLM and AGI Technology needs to develop in a way that responses and outputs can be more reliably safe and predictable. If not, the market can be negatively affected by inaccurate and erratic AGI models and the industry looses product-market fit entirely.

Scenario Map:

DOTS:

Drivers:

  • Increasing demand for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) from businesses and governments.

  • Growing public pressure on governments to bring regulations to AGI use and data capturing.

  • There are currently no regulations related to developing AGI models.

  • Need for the development of safe and robust AGI models.

Opportunities:

  • Using AGI becomes ubiquitous going forward.

  • Partnering with governments and businesses to develop and deploy AGI solutions.

  • Developing new products and services utilizing the AGI.

Threats:

  • Any company is free to enter the market and become the leader with better AGI models.

  • Public concerns over the safety of AGI use, and privacy regarding data collection

  • Responses of AGI becoming increasingly erratic and unpredictable.

  • Concerns on geopolitical safety leading to regulations and potential restriction for AGI use.

Strategic Responses:

  • Collaborating with other world-class AGI experts.

  • Working with the public and policymakers to develop policies that promote the beneficial development and use of AGI.

  • Develop AGI developer platform that is ethical and responsible to combat competition.

Anthropic’s Current Strategy: Visionary

Anthropic is among the first-movers in developing the AI assistant Claude in the Artificial General Intelligence space. Anthropic has a safety-first philosophy. It is pioneering constitutional AI, self-supervised learning, and other techniques to make AI systems significantly more safe, controllable, and aligned with human values.

Anthropic actively curates training data and interactions to incrementally improve Claude responsibly. BARD and ChatGPT have more autonomy in how they train themselves. Anthropic’s training data is carefully curated to avoid biases and safety risks. Anthropic is designed to be more transparent and understandable to humans than other LLMs.

Need for Change:

There are several other companies entering into the AGI space and making AI assistants with a safety-first philosophy because that is what consumers and business users expect from their AI tools. Due to the uncertainty of the technology that may be developed and uncertainties surrounding government regulations on AI usage and privacy, Anthropic needs to build an ecosystem to sustain in the market. The company needs to move to the Shaping Approach in their Strategy.

Anthropic’s Future Strategy: Shaping

Rationale:

The market for various AI tools is in demand and there are several companies in the race to become the market leader in the AI space. The industry is currently unregulated in various major countries of the world where there is a demand for AI tools from government organizations and businesses. While governments cannot let these companies launch AI tools unregulated due to public concern over the safety of their tools, they cannot fall behind other governments that use AI for their technology development.

Stage 1: Seize the opportunity:

Anthropic is ahead of OpenAI and Google in terms of providing safe and reliable AGI models. As an AI assistant focused on being useful, Claude is less prone to hallucinating knowledge or generating speculative content beyond its capabilities. Insurgents like OpenAI have individual AI tools but they have been unable to create an ecosystem of AI-based platforms with the level of reliability that Anthropic has been able to provide.

Stage 2: Evolve the Model:

Anthropic should envision the evolution of its business model by embracing ‘Co-opetition’ with industry leaders like Google, Amazon, Zoom, Salesforce and other potential investors. It is essential for Anthropic to expand beyond conversational AI into other AI domains and apply their principles to new technology domains. This can be achieved by integrating with business software and workflows to provide AI services for partners and related platforms. Anthropic can also offer industry-specific solutions and provide professional services to help companies implement Anthropic's AI.

Stage 3: Lock-in Leadership:

The next phase involves securing Anthropic’s leadership position, generating value, and strategically moving into an ecosystem while monetizing and capturing value. This comprehensive approach is about strengthening their position, providing outstanding benefits to stakeholders, and strategically moving into different areas while effectively taking advantage of new chances that come their way. It's also crucial that they expand the ecosystem while prioritizing sustainable growth.

Evolution Ecosystem Points:

  • Build collaborations and partnerships with leaders in diverse industries:

This can be achieved by integrating with business software and workflows to provide AI services for partners and related platforms. Anthropic can also offer industry-specific solutions and provide professional services to help companies implement Anthropic's AI.

  • Create a strong developer platform and self-sustaining developer ecosystem:

Anthropic can create tools, documentation, and support to make it easy for developers to build apps powered by Anthropic's AI. They can host hackathons and conferences to bring developers together. Anthropic can offer incentives like grants and partnerships. Anthropic should allow 3rd party developers and companies to offer products and services based on Anthropic's platform. They can take a revenue share and become the underlying AI provider.
